When "Mommy my stomach hurt!" requires medical attention

My Tummy Hurts…

One of the main reasons I am writing this is to potentially help save a childs life. Here is my story!

A few weeks ago my daughter complained of a stomach ache. Being the typical mom, I dismissed it as something she ate or needed to have a bowel movement. The next morning she said, “Mom my stomach still hurts.” I got her dressed, fed her crackers, and sent her off to school. Since I work at the school I told the teacher if her stomach continues to hurt allow her to put her head down and I would pick her up immediately following school. She rested all day in class completing some work but nothing major happened. I check with the teacher who stated she seemed fine by the end of the day. I checked with my daughter who stated she felt better, therefore I decided to stay at work and send her to extended care to play for a while.

About an hour after arriving home she stated her stomach pain had returned. At this point I am wondering if she is faking this whole stomache ache thing but then again after raising three other kids I have learned to never take the faking route because you never know. Based on this I called her doctor and explained the problem: stomach pain, vomiting the first day, no fever, no diarrhea, no appetite. The doctor felt it was maybe the flu coming on. I thought the flu..NOT! She is not coughing, snifling, soar throat, nothing. So I did what every typical mother does..I jumped on the internet and researched the flu. Well, there it was stomach pain..okay so I was wrong...hey, I am not a doctor. It wasn’t the first time and surely wont be the last.

The next morning my little sunshine felt better and off to school we went. But later that day she ate and vomited and also developed a soar throat so I decided to keep her home and keep an eye on her. She started to run a fever and get the sniffles so I figured okay the flu. I took her to the doctor and they gave her an antibiotic for her throat. I ran out to get all the typical cough medicine and fill her with fluids. By Monday she felt better and again we were off to another week at school. No stomach pain, no fever, nothing. GREAT!

The following week she developed a bizarre rash and again I took her to the doctor because I figured she has been sick for two weeks now and this is not normal. I have watched enough HOUSE to know this is not normal. The doctor told me this is just a rash and gave her a steroid and discontinued the antibiotic. A few days later she felt better.

The following week she began to complain of stomach pain again. I told her to rest and see if it goes away. She did but she would play with her siblings so again I dismissed the problem. In the middle of the night she came to get in the bed with us, which is not abnormal. The next morning she complained of her stomach hurting but this time she was rocking with the pain. I again reached for the internet to research stomach pain in children, I wrote down her bowel movements, and charted the past 2 ½ weeks. I went to the store to get something to help with her stomach ache. When I returned home she was in tears. I rushed to her side, trying to remain calm, to determine what is wrong. I took her temperature..low grade! I asked the typical questions: 1. Where does it hurt? 2. How bad is the pain? 3. Are you hungry? 4. Are you thirsty? 5. Can you get up? 6. Did you go potty since mommy left?

So, now I give her a pain killer and some plum juice to move the crowd inside. A few moments later she cries louder. I go back to her room and she is rocking even more this time holding her stomach. I stretch her legs out (pain) and lay my hand on her stomach. She tells me that doesn’t hurt. I press down and she cries louder. I tell the other children to get dressed because we are leaving. I call her pediatrician to let her know I am going to the emergency room. She concurs and off we go! I rush her in..at this point I will spare you of my emergency room nightmare. Lets just say after a 5 hour wait we finally get blood test and a CT scan.

Before we were back in the room good the doctor was in there giving us the bad news. Our daughter had to have surgery because she had appendicitis. Then another doctor enters the room and ask me to explain what happen. I tell him how the pain started weeks ago, and how I called the doctor, took her to the doctor twice, and how this morning she is crying in pain but now she feels better. HUH? She feels better…she is talking…laughing…and having a good time. She is her old self again so are you sure this is appendicitis. The head physician states and I quote, “This is not good.” Now I am scared..why? He tells us the pain leaving is the calm before the storm. How sometimes right before your appendix ruptures you don’t feel pain. How the pain with appendicitis comes and goes and she needs surgery immediately. WHAT!

Within a few minutes a surgeon enters the room and explains everything and how we got to this point. How fecal matter gets into your appendix and it gets all infected and yucky and requires removal. He explains why my five year old needs surgery within the next hour…they need to assemble a team and this will happen within 30 minutes to an hour. I am on the phone with all my prayer warriors asking them to get the lines of prayer open. My husband and I pray over our daughter and for the healing of her little body.

I will spare you the remaining details but want to tell every parent this:

  1. Don’t ignore the stomach aches – touch their stomach. It is a myth that the pain is on the right side only. It appears in various places of the abdominal area and then may finally be in the appendix area (right side).
  2. Don’t be a typical parent be paranoid when your child is sick. Now I am not implying that you run to the doctor if your child coughs but I am suggesting that you do your homework and listen to your child
  3. Keep calling the doctor
  4. Demand a CT scan for a reoccurring stomach ache
  5. Get a good medical book – I have one and it helps
  6. Ask your doctor for good medical websites for children where you can research ailments
  7. If your child is in pain and you want them to be seen ASAP go by ambulance or you risk waiting for hours in an emergency room (ambulatory patients get precedence over walk-ins)
  8. Research Appendicitis – it is nothing nice and can kill you if it ruptures. Studies show 1 in 15 people will have their appendix removed. A kindergartner in my area recently died because of a ruptured appendix (the toxins from the appendix and intestines spread quickly through her tiny little body).

My daughter is home now and healing – praise God. The surgeons stated her appendix was nasty and they are sure they just caught it before it ruptured. The surgeon stated she has a high pain tolerance because she should have been screaming in agony because it was really bad. I know God was watching over my daughter because this could have turned out much worse. I pray this help you.

I'm so glad you published this. We had something similar when my daughter was 2. She woke up from a nap with severe stomach pain. The doctors dismissed it as her faking it. It continued so we rushed her to the ER. The doctor on call there looked right at me and claimed I was an over-reactive first time mother. After her x-ray, they rushed in and had me move her to Children's Hospital because it seemed her intestines had telescoped inside themselves. At Children's they determined that her appendix was abnormal. Since they did not want to cut into such a young child, they monitor her for several days. They didn't do surgery, but her appendix is abnormal. Anytime she has stomach pain, she is rushed in and examined.

Never ignore children's pain once you examine it and research it. Go with a mother's gut instinct. If you have to, see mulitple doctors opinions. It doesn't hurt and can only reassure a mother.

LJ Miller Hub Author 3 years ago

I cannot agree more and like you said impress upon parents to follow their instincts and get second opinions. Another key is if you do your homework as a parent you will know what questions to ask and what test to potentially request. Another important tip...keep a notebook with your child's medical history. Include medications, shots, doctor calls, insurance information, EVERYTHING. It is hard to remember all this information when one is under stress.

Welcome to HubPages! Your intriguing title caught my attention (along with the fact that RGraf had commented so I knew your hub must be good!).

This is invaluable information for parents. It realy points to how we, as health care consumers, need to advocate to get help. Imagine if your precious daughter didn't have you there to insist on the CT scan. I also totally agree that if you want to be seen in the ER, go by ambulance. I hate to say it, but I've spent more than my share of time in the ER (not for myself, but in the advocate role). The system is far from perfect.

I hope you keep writing hubs based on your wisdom and life experience. BTW, I love the phrase "prayer warriors" -- that's so right on! MM

Glad everything is OK now, but how scary! I always get paranoid when my kids complain of stomach ache. Which I guess is a good thing.

Nayberry profile image

Nayberry 3 years ago

Wow! This is really helpful. I have had problems with my kids that some parents say that they would have never caught. My youngest got a ornament hook caught in his throat and even the doctors said that it was amazing that I picked up on it. I just knew that his voice sounded funny. That is what made me take a look in his mouth. I couldn't see what it was, but I knew it was something.

As parents, it pays to be diligent. Some parents put things off until it is too late.

I thought he was mad because I had been at the hospital with my niece while she was having a baby and he couldnt go.. I thought he wanted to get to that hospital anyway possible.... He had just had the stomache flu 2 wks prior to this new onset stomache problem.. We didnt waste anytime..went to ER.. and 8 hrs later.. he was having surgery.. My heart fell to my stomache when the Dr came in to tell us he would not be going home, he had appendicitis! I dont play around anymore when my kids are tellin my their tummies are hurting!

Hi my 5 yr old had his apendix removed about a week ago, he woke up on saturday with a bit of temperature and i asumed it was a cold, so by the time night time arrived he was back to normal jumping playing etc, and his temperature had gone but then he suddenly felt really cold and started shivering, so i immediately called my emergency Dr who sent me straight away to A and E as he suspected it was his panedix, and i thought hmmm hes wrong ?? his stomach pain is not that bad?? so got to the hospital he had all his test done which confirmed he had some kind of infection more likely to be his apendix causing this, then on sunday he had to have an emergency surgery and they found his apendix had swollen, he has recovered really fast, and is now back to his usual self.

RandyK 18 months ago

One point of contention. A diagnosis of appendicitis in a child does not require a CT, and we are doing them less and less on kids due to recent findings regarding radiation risks of CT in children. If a child presents to the ER with signs and symptoms of appendicitis, most good pediatric surgeons will put a laparascope in the belly, take a quick look and do an appendectomy if indicated. The CT is only indicated if the diagnosing physician is a moron. It is expensive, adds little, isn't a very good test for appendicitis in skinny little kids due to decreased fat stranding, and is a potential radiation risk, so PLEASE don't come to my ER demanding a CT. If I even remotely think your child has appendicitis, he is going to the OR. Almost always when we strongly suspect it, we are correct. Your experience blows my mind in that the doctor just blew you off.

Paramedic 16 months ago

I like this but it is a MYTH that you get seen faster by ambulance, if anything it will slow things down because this is not a way to use 911. Nurses will triage you at your arrival and then base your illness with an acuity number. Do nit use an ambulance to be seen faster, that is just abuse...

Hi what your daughter has was a bit like me I'm 12 and I suffer with IBS Irrital bowel syndrome my mum said I was faking it due to the concerns at school which were bad. But the problems at school had gone and I still had stomach pains. I went to the doctors and I had a blood test done the results came back and nothing was found so they suggested IBS I was given calming tablets and IBS tablets turned out they worked so the doctor said it's IBS and it won't go away of course I got worried. It was bad as I kept on going to the toilet this made me nearly have a month of school I went back after Easter holidays. All my teachers was warned. The way it happened was awful I was in school and I felt sick so I went to the medical room and was sent home and it continued. I still have IBS and will do for rest of my life.

We experienced the same thing with our daughter. Our Pedi & the first ER misdiagnosed her because her pain threshold was high as well. We heard the exact same thing...Stomach Flu and even constipation. We ended up taking her to CHOC and they confirmed that she needed an appendectomy. She had some complications because we waited so long (one week) but now she is recovering as well.

Hi i went to a girls/women doctor august 25th it turns out i have a tiny cyst the size of a pennie but november 9th im taking another ultrasound to check if it has got any bigger :/ when i touch my stomach it feels hard but it prob has something to do with my posture because i have a slumped back lol a sit wier so maybe my tummy has got used to that and now my stomach hurts :-( All of this started when my period 1st came on so if anyone know if this is regular or not please let me know ;-)

anonymous 9 months ago

Well maybe it could be between the cyst...or posture cysts can make your tummies hurt but if you drink coffe it helps :-) and posture also makes your back/stomach hurt too.

Well People People Calm down.....MY STOMACHS KILLING ME!! heres my storyit was summer break when my period first came on my mom thought it was poo (gross i kno) then the next day it turned burgamyish color i was like Wht the crapp i screammed to my mom she had a mom-daughhter talk with me about periods and so and so Later on i was having a blast with my summer until one day my stomach was hurting so bad my mom considered it could be cramps, gas,or hungriness. So i have a sprite a little bite of 2 fries and i walked around with chewing gum in my mouth. I went to the doctor they did urine and considered it was a stomach bug. 2 weeks later my stomach still hurted after taking the medicine right.

i went once again to the emergency room this time they did a blood and urine test that time they said i was constipated. My summer was getting worst and worst my stomach hurted again 4 more weeks later then we had enough i went to my family doctor (i was avoiding going there because i had to take my 11 yr old shots in order to go to school) I went there and i took my shots which were painfully bad then my doctor told me to take a ultrasound when we went there we figured out it was a cyst in one of my ovaries what was causing all the pain then after that i went to a Women/Girl Doctor and a really good doctor said since i started my period my hormones have to get useed to it.i have another ultrasound scheduled in November My stomach still gives me problems but im solving them by eating right, getting out gas (by burping) and other suggestions Thanks for your time And my next Update will be November 4th if I get to make it i will see you guys on November 4th :-)

Thank you very much for this post, My son 5 yr old had been complaining about similar stomach pain for 2 days last week and we did take him to the doctor, but nothing was found. What helped was i kept a warmed bag on his tummy whenever he said it hurts. Also i gave him some pepto bismol, guess that helped him. What i am concerned now is my 2 year old has been complaining the same for the last 2 nights... i havent taken him to the doctor yet. Do anyone here thinks i need to take him to the doctor?

"7. If your child is in pain and you want them to be seen ASAP go by ambulance or you risk waiting for hours in an emergency room (ambulatory patients get precedence over walk-ins)"

You realize ambulatory patients and walk in patients are the same right? Ambulatory means able to walk... It does not mean you came by ambulance. I've taken many patients in my ambulance and put them in a wheelchair and wheeled them into the same waiting room as everyone else... Only difference in the 1k bill you're going to get cause I took you there.

My family and i are dealing with the loss of my grandomother right now. She was mis-diagnosed 3 times..previous to the fourth time she was properly diagnosed with a ruptured appendix, but by the time they got it right, her body was so infected with bacteria from her appendix that she passed away within an hour of the "right" diagnoses. So needless to say we are now deep in Kaiser Permanente's pockets, for them not thinking how doctors get paid to do, instead of typing the symptoms into their "computer system" and just waiting for an answer...I mean..a monkey can be trained to enter sypmtoms into a goddamn computer and wait for the results...What happened to the real doctors? WE OWN YOU KAISER PERMANENTE...

Hello,

I had a situation in which my son age 14 at the time was ill. This was on a Friday. I called the doctor, and he said to just let it wait until Monday. My son was taking in fluids and still dehydrating. I listened to the Holy Spirit and took him to the hospital that same Friday. The hospital called within a few hours to bring him back in. He had contracted campylobacterjujuni-deadly food poisoning. He would have been dead Monday. After reading your words today, I took my 6 yr. old daughter to E.R. Just got out of emergency surgery to remove her appendix. With many family members are anxiously awaiting a call about how it went, I instead wanted to get my heartfelt thanks out to you. Your story made a difference and it's fair to say, a big one. I am so very grateful for the time and effort you put into getting your story out. My deepest graitude to you.

I can not agree with you or state it any better my self. I went through an identical situation with my daughter at the age of 6 whom is now 7 that will soon have another Birthday thanks to God healing her. She completely recovered after arriving at the hospital with what I thought was a pulled muscle from cheer-leading at 7:30 p.m. and come to find out I was wrong and she was in EMERGENCY surgery soon after our CT was FINALLY read at 11:30.Bare in mind we live in a VERY small town & they had to call a surgeon in from 40 minutes away to do her surgery at 11:00 at night. Thanks for sharing your story in hopes that another child might be saved!

Very interesting, although you could not be more wrong in regards to a person being seen faster by taking an ambulance. People are prioritized both from ambulances and walk ins and then treated accordingly. Being seen faster because you are in an ambulance is one of the biggest myths or misconceptions ever.

Hello to all,

Here is my story..

One day, I had an ingrown toenail & I got it out with a pair of clippers. It began to get infected and my dr prescribed me w/Keflex on the 12th of November. I took it 3x per day for 5 days and then began to have diarrhea. So, I didn't take the medicine any longer. Exactly 1month later on the 18th of December after I had eaten chicken-&-dumplings, green beans, and mashed potatoes, I had nausea and stomach pain all over. I was at the end of my period...so I thought I was that. Well, the next day my abdomen still hurt. I've been to the dr 3x. 5 tubes of blood, stool samples, breath tests, 3 urinalysis, and a trip to the ER. I've been tested for everything... But at the ER they figured it was an ulcer and they said my whole large intestine was filled with feces. I'm now on Prilosec 1x per day to heal the ulcer if theres even one there. My stomach has hurt everyday since December 18 & it is now February 12th. I am 13 and I'm going to England and Paris on March 2nd. I cry almost everyday, wondering why this is happening to me. Sometimes my mom thinks I'm faking when I cry out in pain, but the doctors haven't found anything. I just wonder what I have done to deserve this? & if I miss this England and France trip because of this my heart will be absolutely broken. Nobody on this Earth deserves to go through what I have gone through. Please, of anybody has any answers?, help me. Also, this has been one of the worst possible sicknesses to get because I have an extreme fear of throwing up.. So, whenever my stomach hurts a lot I get very worked up and scared. I cry out to the Lord everyday, and I cry to all of my family. My mom is getting tired of me crying, but I cry out in pain and because I don't understand why this is happening to me! And I feel like there's no hope because the doctors have found NOTHING... Nothing. Please anybody help me... Because I'm fed up. Iknow a lot of you don't think almost 2 months is a long time, but it is for a 13yr old living in pain, and trying to make her family proud with straight A's and Lyrical, Tap, Jazz, and Pointe... Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. This is my 11th year of dance... And I'm afraid this is going to stop me from doing the things that I love. Please.... I'm helpless.

Hannah 3 months ago

It's me again, I forgot to say that I did have a Vitamin D deficiency. Im on Culturelle 1x per day, just in case it was the Keflex that removed all of the good bacteria out of my digestive tract. I also take a half of a pain pill 1x per day and drink Prune Juice everyday. I was on Milk of Magnesia, but it did nothing for me. My stomach hurt up very high. Almost right in the middle under my breasts. I believe that that's a wierd place for it to hurt, but that is almost the place where an ulcer can be located. I've had no random diarrhea or throwing up. My breath test found "chronic constipation", but I've been that way almost my whole life and it's never affected me. Also I've gone 14 days one time w/out taking a bowel movement. If it is constipation, then why is it just affecting me now?? And even when I clean my system out my stomach sill hurts. And sometimes my stomach hurts on my actual upper right side, in the front right, and every now and then around te back of the right side. Answers will be much appreciated. God Bless You All, ?

Wow, thanks for all the insight. I was at work last night, my 11 yr daughter was txting me, seemed fine, than out of blue I got a txt "Mommy, my belly hurts." I thought okay, mayb she just needed to close her eyes and rest. It was after all bed time. She sent me two more txts saying she could barely move to go potty her belly hurt that bad. I told her to wake up her dad, I couldnt help her i wasnt there, that id be home in an hr or so to check on her. She didnt want to wake him. she than txted rather demanding i thought which seemed alarming, " Mommy, leave work now, I really need you." Luckily the girl i worked with (recently having her appendix taken out) understood that i needed to go get my kid after showing her the txts. I took her to the e.r. and she has appendicitis, early stage, they said, but i still made an appt. w/ her ped. to take care of this issue. Thank God, for motherly instincts!!

Adrian Michael 3 months ago

I know how rough that is for a kid... When I was 6 my mum thought I had the stomach flu. And we had scheduled a doctor appointment. It was that whole thing 'fine one minute, vomiting and debilitating pain the next'. We get to the doctor and are rushed to the hospital immediately. While we were in the tunnel connecting the buildings, the doctor explained she suspected appendicitis. A specialist was brought in, ct scan taken and less than two hours after getting in to the doctor I was in surgery. We were told after I was in recovery that I got lucky. The only reason it didn't rupture was cause there was a small tear in it letting off some pressure. Mind, recovery still sucked and I had antibiotics being pumped into me because of infection.

Well, look on the bright side. You won't have to wonder whether or not your little girl's tummy ache is appendicitis now.

My stomach's been hurting for about 4 days now. I have let my mom know and she told me to stretch out. I did that and it worked… when I was stretched out. As soon as I got back up it was hurting bad again. It hurt so bad that when I was in the bathroom at school I had to lay down because I couldn't take the pain. Yesterday I called my mom at work and explained to her that it hurts when I push down on it, and all that jazz and she stated "Oh my gosh." that sorta freaked me out because she's a nurse! She knows the symptoms because my sister recently had surgery for her appendix bursting. We have not gone to the doctor yet but we're planning to today or tomorrow. Do y'all think it could be appendicitis? I researched it last night and it fits my symptoms minus the vomiting. I'm dizzy, my stomach hurts BADLY, and it hurts when you push down. Also I have no appetite. Please help!

I had mine burst when I was 6. I was out downtown with my

Uncles girlfriend and I complained about stomach pains she believed me because she knew I would not lie to her. At this point I couldn't walk so I had to be carried. I went back to my grandmas house and fell asleep at my bedtime. I was awaken at about 1am I was apparently crying in my sleep. They took me to the emergency room I waited. 5 hours later they took me in and tested me. My grandparents called my parents and they had to tell them I needed surgery. My mom was so scared I wasn't going to make it but my dad told her it was better to die trying. I made it out and my mom was by my side the whole week in the hospital. Because of my grandparents, uncles girlfriend and my dad I am alive today. I am not a religious person but thank you god

My cousin Steven, had his appendix burst when we were 8, and felt nothing for days, well he was dizzy... about 4 days after the dizziness started his stomach hurt, and 3 days after that his pain was so excruciating that he was sent to the E.R. His Mum came home (we were also neighbors but Steven is my biological cousin)in tears without my cousin, and informed us that he needs surgery. All is well today! and we are both 12!

My son will be 7 and he has complained of stomach pains for about a year now. They have done blood test and a CT scan about 10 months ago, and it all came back normal. He is still complaining and the past 2 months he has been complaining of his right leg hurting, I have been passing that off as growing pains, should I be concerned?

I had my appendix taken out about 5 months ago, luckily I got mine out in the early stages, the emergancy waiting room took 5 hours until I could actually see a doctor. But yeah listen to your children and When the push down in that area and they scream ( like me) its probably 50% chance its a appendicitis.

My son is 11, and has complained of a stomach ache for years. I have always said, "If you're not throwing up or have a fever you are going to school." Well recently (he is now in the fifth grade) he has complained more and more. I have run him into the ER for it and they find nothing. I brought him to our primary yesterday, and he said it sounded more like acid reflux, and put him on omeprizole 1x a day. (Prilocek) He has been out of school this last week and a half, and this morning he woke up not really rithing in pain, but rolling around saying his stomach hurt, and that the pain now moved from the middle of the stomach to just under the right rib cage. I ran him into ER (NOT VERY HAPPY--THINKING HE IF FAKING), and they took his blood for a Ddimer, and and X-ray of his stomach. Guess what..........

nothing. I don't know whether to be mad at myself or mad at him. If somebody can tell me what I should do? I want to believe my child, but the boy who cried wolf comes to mind. HELP??????????????????????

that was a great story to share. My Daughter had a simular experience when she was 4 yrs old. she was complaining of a stomach ache. she was not a whiner or cry baby. when she went to bed she was down for the night. this time was different, she kept waking up and fussing. To make matters worse, we had a flight scheduled for the next day to go out of state for a vacation. i took her to the ER at 1am, she slept on the way in the car, so i thought well maybe it isnt what i thought it was. they sent us home after tests. after we got home she started complaining again... I took her out again to another hopital and they said it was her appendix and she was also dehyrated and she needs surgery NOW. I was frantic, they rushed to find a dr. to operate on a 4 yr old Her Appendix burst while she was on the OR table. she spent a week in the hospital and recovered nicely. had i not taken her back to the hospital it would have burst on the plane! My daughter is now 31 yrs old with two children of her own.

I'm not a mom but I am a teen who just got her apendix removed.I had he pain for one day and at the end I went to the hospital.children's of corset, since I have a heart condition and all that good stuff. Lol. Anyways, and the doctor thought I didn't have it because I have a higher pain tolerence that I hardly felt anything even after the surgery. I got up and walked around and ate! I didn't eat for almost two days, well I'm glad she's okay. God, a 5 year old? Poor thing, getting something like this at 5 isn't fun.

hahah wow.. while i was reading this i was like "it's appendicitis, it's appendicitis!" then i read that it WAS appendicitis and i was like "i knew it!!!!" hahaha.. well, because 2 years ago .. this almost exact story happened to me.. but my appendix got infected and i stayed in the hospital for a week :/

i was 16 years old ... and being in a room.. for a week with nothing to do ... sucked sooooo much. but i gotta say it was scary feeling that amount of pain and being rushed to the hospital followed by ct scans and well i hope she's doing well now and that was a great story to share to let everyone else know that it can become serious when this happens.

Jana 2 months ago

But all the tests come back with nothing wrong. He has been put on omeprazole, and has not complained of his stomach, but today it was his head. I ran him to the ER (I was ticked), and they did a CT of his head. Nothing was abnormal, but he did have a mild concussion. He stayed home from school and "rested" his brain. Which I know is a good thing, but.............

come on

My 6 yr old daughter has had tummy issues since she was about a year old. Curling up in a ball & screaming. Genuine tears, and a look to stop any mother's heart - the silent plea to make it go away.

We went through 4 pediatricians, and countless ER visits who always pounced on the "gastroenteritis" or "possible early appendicitis" - then always sent us home with orders to feed her the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast).

She started out severely constipated, then at about 3 yrs old - she switched to diarrhea.

And all of this was considered "normal" to her doctors.

Then one blessed day, my mother-in-law was sitting in a Dr waiting room, watching a closed circuit television program on Celiac Disease. She actually postponed her appt so she could get a hold of us & We begged our daughter's Dr to run one more test.

It took a week for the Celiac panel to come back...

overwhelmingly positive.

And all her current Dr said was "Why didn't we think o f this sooner?"

Have you ever wanted to hug, and punch, and cry, and sigh in relief, all at the same time?

We've been gluten free for 3 months, and tummy aches are gone!!! (and BRAT diet is now just the BRA diet)

Good morning,

Great topic. Back in January our 11 year old daughter had severe stomach pains...the kind that had her hugging her knees to her chest. She threw up bile a couple of times. Her older sister had just gotten over a flu bug the day before, so I thought it was possibly the flu in her as well. However God spoke to me and told me to take her in. I had heard about appendicitis enough to know a little about it and when we reached the Doctors office I told the nurse at the window that I thought maybe my daughter had an appendicitis and they got me right in. Once in a room, after telling the dr. the whole story, he says it's just the flu and that he will write a script for her. I knew that was not it and INSISTED he check her tummy. He had her lay on the table and he pressed on her tummy and she came off the table a few inches in extreme pain.

Five minutes later we were next door at the hospital getting blood tests and a ct. At this point I knew something was wrong, but wasn't overly scared. They did two ct scans, after which the radiologist came to talk with me. He said something was deffinately wrong and he was sending us to the OR where the surgeon would meet us. Know I'm getting a little more anxious. Eventually the surgeon comes in and says she needs surgery but doesn't feel comfortable performing it on an 11 year old (we live in a very small, remote town in the mountains). He says she will need to be life flighted to children's hospital...now I'm very freaked out. The doctors could not tell us what was wrong except that there was a mass in her abdomen and that they couldn't find her appendix on the ct.

Anyway, really long story shorter, after many more scans and tests at Children's they found that she was born with a congenital condition called malrotation. This is where the bowels don't rotate back into the abdomen correctly and hers were rotating on themselves and cutting off the blood supply to her intestines. She was taken into surgery to correct the malrotatio, remove the mass caused by lack of blood supply and removed her appendix as well. I remember listening to the surgeon explain what he did and thinking "is this really possible". He tells us that all of her abdominal organs were switched around and none were where they are supposed to be and even though he moved things around she is still a mirror image of what is normal.

CRAZY...since then we have learned she was born with what is called hederotaxy/polysplenia (more than one spleen...in hercase six). This condition comes with major complications in most kiddos and most die just after birth because of serious cardiac conditions. We have had her heart checked out and Praise God she has a normal heart. We will be on the lookout for other complications in the future but for now she is back to her fun loving, awesome self.

From experience..it is always better to be safe than sorry!!!

Hello I am a 16 year old teen from a small city in Washington. A couple months ago I had appendicitus, but the doctors here told us it was the flu and kept me in the hospital FOR A WEEK. After a week of waiting, my mom and I knew it was time to find out was wrong. So we got transferred to a better hospital in Seattle. Within a few hours of being there they came back and told us it was appendicitus, but because of how long we had been in our home town, they couldn't operate. All they could do was put drain tubes in to see if they could drain the infection. (The appendix had already ruptured and the infection had been spreading). The next day they said they couldn't wait as long as they had intended to wait to operate and remove the appendix, because the drains were not draining the infection fast enough and it would spread into my blood stream and kill me soon enough if they didn't operate, so that day I had my appendix removed. It's a long story of everything that happened, but I was in the Seattle hospital for 2 more weeks after that. If you would like to read about my whole story you can email me at chrisshort1995@gmail.com

when i was 14 right before new school year began i came down with a really bad sto

ach ache. i told my mom that i was having abnormal pain and she dismissed it as mother nature coming in. i had tried to tell her it was not the same but what she said was a little comforting and tried convincing myself she was right and spent about three days enduring the pain... i did not eat, whatever went in my body came right back out... IMMEDIATELY, high fever, and on the last night i out of pain i was even screaming in my sleep. I dont remember doing so but my mother and rest of my family all would comre and watch me and thats when it became a concern to my parents. my mother took to my doctor as soon as we got in he immediaty told my mother to.rush me childrens hospital and they took all of five minutes to hook me up and inform my mother i was going for surgery because i had apendicitis. my mother cried she felt so awful becuase she hadnt believed me and at that piont i was just so rrelieved she had believed at end becuase after surgery the doctor told my mom that i was really lucky and chances were there would not have been a tomorrow for me. my poor mom felt soo guilty. my apendix did not burst however it made a hole and was leaking to my side by the time i went in. i spent a week in the hospital... well im an adult now and to this day i still cant eat seeds or anything too spicy. i get bad stomach cramps. not everyone is the same but for you moms out there i would avoid these kinds of snacks or meals for your little ones to avoid tummy troubles.

My 7 year old son is vnormally very active and he even played a football match yesterday but then last night said that his belly hurt and pointed to the left side, i dismissed this as a pulled muscle from football, but this morning his belly is still hurting and he is now walking funny to compensate the pain, i have spoken to the doctors and they have said for him to rest and if he doesnt get any better in a few days then to take him to the doctors, I have decided to leave it til my husband gets home from work and if he isnt any better then he will be going to A & E at our local hospital.

C'mon reading these true happenings ought to inspire you to believe your own flesh and blood! You seem hard on him just by the comments you make!

Stop thinking about the $ and care about and worry about the life that is in your hands to care for! I hope your relationship with him is close it feels like it may not based on how skeptical you are of his symptoms and he had a concussion how do you think that occurred? Anyway Jana time to use your heart and think if it was you who had to rely on the opinion of a parent, when your symptoms may be legitimate. As I always say to people. Work, things and so on will always be there but life may not! Live in the now and not later! Quality time with kids may not always be available.. Our bodies are mysterious and even if they say they find Nothing I think the lesson on this page is Their not 100% accurate so cut him some slack and hug and kiss him be understanding that's what He NEEDS MOST FROM YOU

I had the same situation with my 6 year old daughter always complaining of stomach pain. And one day, as she complaining that her stomach is painful and she said she doesnt feel good, then I decided to take her to the emergency because I wanna know what is going on with my girls stomach. Everything was checked. Her blood, ultrasound and the doctor asked me if I want her to have the scanned and of course I said yes....by the way, her blood test was normal and the ultrasound came out normal. After two hours of waiting of the CT scan, the result was fine...And I thanked God, it was nothing to worry about. Now, once in a while she gets stomach ache and wonder if there is something else going on in there ? I just hope not...Anyways, whatever pain your child is experiencing, take her to er just to be safe...

To the parent above good for you; you saved your little girl's life. Remind her of that when she becomes a mother. It is a lesson leaned at very little cost ( I am supposing she is alive well and healthy.)

I am 46 and the youngest of 5 children; I would of been an only child if it were not for my father. My 4 older brothers and sisters had the appendicitis. between the years 1968 and 1982in time before computers and CT scans, back when the rebound test, blood work and a doctor with crack skills was what you had and it had to be enough or else!

The doctor wanted to send them home with instructions for an enema. My father all four times yelled at the surgeons and basically forced them to perform surgery, once under the threat of bodily harm if my brother died. All four times my dad was right and 4 different ER docs were wrong. All 4 ruptured appendicitis requiring irrigation of the peritoneal cavity and lots of IV antibiotics to kill the infection they were left with and the apology of a hospital that could not understand what had happened.

Point being docs are not always right and sometimes the parent needs to pay attention to that nagging voice even when faced with an army of sheepskins the tell you otherwise.

As for the internet I advise every parent to learn the basics of physiology and then read the sights that are up for the doctors. If all else fails Google the symptoms. The life you save may be more valuable to you than your own!.

Hi, my name is Hannah, I am 17 and I have been having abdominal pain for months and months maybe even close to a year, it hurts to lay on my belly, it feels like constant cramping in the belly, it has never gone away, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it could be, ASAP? Thankyou

Lizma 6 weeks ago

I suffered form abdominal pain and cramping on and off for years. untrasounds and blood work came up with nothing. My doctor of course diagnosed me with IBS, the ultimate copout diagnosis which really means i don't know. He gave me a little red pill. the pill did not make it better.

Long story short: I self diagnosed that I have aversion to many food coloring and preservatives found in foods. Especially Red40. That is my kryptonite. I started the journey of looking at my diet after eating twizzlers one night and feeling completely nausious..

The worst part it that my doctor never suggested I look at diet. It seems so logical to me now. If your abdomen hurts that should be one of the first things you look at. Everything you put in your body goes straight there.

So now i avoid red40, eat only natural beef, and found I am also lactose intolerant.

Good luck to all on your stomach journey.

It's a good thing your daughter is okay.

I wish I could say the same for myself, though. My stomach has been hurting off and on for, what I believe has been four days. My throat has been hurting, as well. I have been having diahreah(excuse my spelling, I am only 13, and that is a hard word!) My mother has given me no medicine, but I haven't asked for any, either. I have also been unable to sleep. I think I need the attention of a doctor, but before I go telling my mom that, I would like your opinions first.

Please reply to this comment! Thanks!

In july the 9 or 10 2011 iwas visiting mexico and I just came from my cusins house. We ate popcorn and when I got home I went to my room and that's when I felt a sharp pain in my stomach so I went to tell my mom and she said it's no biggy that it would ware off with the medicine. So I patiently waited to ware off but 15 minutes later it got worse. I begged my mom to give me more medicine and she did. It was time for me to go to bed, I tryed sleeping but I couldn't , I twised and turned and moving with anger of the pain. My mom starded fixing me up a tea, after I drank it the pain was just getting worse and worse. I vomited alot that night and my skin was pale white. The next day my mom took me to the doctor really early. That day I went to the hospital but I was on med so I had to wait till it would ware off. I got to the O.R. And when I woke up from the surgury I was choking but then I starded to breath but I felt really dizzy. Finally I had no more pain. Mothers don't ignore your chilldren with stomach aces take them to doctors. If results come out negative on test go to diff doctors they could be wrong.

On Friday I went on my straight A field trip. When we came back we had pizza and soda, then went back to our classes. That Friday night my stomach stared hurting (thought it was cramps because I was on my period). My mouth watered up and I ran to the toilet. I threw up 4 times and then had those annoying throw ups that are like spit or water. So on Saturday I felt like sh**. I was thirsty every five to ten minutes and wasn't hungry. So I looked on the internet on what I can eat they said either: a banana, rice, toast, or crackers. Before I ate the banana I took two antacids then two hours later I ate the banana. I have always had trouble with regular bowel movement. I can go a week with out taking a number two and when I do its like the same thing all over again. Then on Sunday I felt a lot better so we went out dress shopping for my award ceremony and dance. I burped a few times and it felt good on my stomach. We ate some pretzel bites and I had one slice of pizza (usually I have three) but I lost my appetite and I wasn't hungry. At night my 5 year old brother threw up like 4 times then went to bed. I hope its not the stomach flu because I know my friend had the stomach flu and he was gone from school for 5 days. Just took two more antacids because I have an upset stomach. What do I do! I am 14 years of age. I want this to be done and over with.
